***OSI Inaugural Golf Tournament***

Occupational Services, Inc. hosted its Inaugural Golf Tournament on Monday, October 19th at the Chambersburg County Club.

The event began at 7:30 a.m. with a hearty hot breakfast catered by the Woods Café, and sponsored by TBWoods.    “Closest to the Pin” and “Beat the Pro” contests  took place on the course.

The event was followed by a hot lunch catered by the Chambersburg County Club.  Winners of the tournament received commemorative golf shirts and pro shop gift certificates.

The event also featured a “Ball Drop” raffle.   Each ticket number corresponded to a golf ball with the same number.  Golf balls were raised 60 feet and dropped over a pin on the putting green.  The first ball to drop in or closest to the hole would win $1,000 cash.  However, there were actually two balls lodged in the cup, with two winners receiving $500.00 each.  The ball drop was sponsored by Strait Steel.

Proceeds from this inaugural tournament were applied                toward OSI's  future building fund.

The event was a huge success!  Thank you to all sponsors and participants!  The first annual OSI golf tournament has already been scheduled for October 14, 2010.   Please mark your calendars!

For more information on the tournament, contact Michael Jamison, Executive Director at 717-263-9293.

***The Woods Cafe'***

After several months of intensive planning, OSI opened its first food service venture at the TB Woods facility in Chambersburg on July 28, 2009.  The Woods Café, as this venture has been dubbed, provides hot and cold breakfast and lunch items to the employees of TB Woods.  The Café is an extension of OSI’s employment programs which provide consumers with training experiences within the community.

Preparations for the opening included staff certification through the ServSafe course provided by Penn State’s Cooperative Extension office which prepares individuals to receive nationally recognized certification in food service safety.  Other preparations included researching and securing vendors, ordering start-up supplies, and training staff in food service procedures. In addition, OSI was fortunate to receive consultation services from Roger Tappan of Johnnies, Inc.  Roger assisted with menu planning and development, as well as with a pre-opening taste testing event held at TB Woods on July 21st.  Many thanks to Roger for sharing his invaluable expertise and advice in the development of The Woods Café project!

Currently, The Woods Café is open for business Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., but it is anticipated that hours will be extended to Fridays within the foreseeable future.  A core group of OSI staff oversee the operation of the café.  In addition, a core group of job coaches and ET consumers participate in food preparation, service, and clean-up on a daily basis.  Consumers work with job coaches to complete tasks such as preparing salads, portioning desserts and dressings, restocking the soda and food coolers, assembling sandwich orders, and washing dishes, just to name a few.  All of the consumers who have had an opportunity to work at the café have enjoyed their experiences and have requested that they be scheduled at the cafe again.
