Music Therapy at OSI
MUSIC THERAPY
Research has found that music affects the mind and body by relieving stress. O.S.I. Music Therapy began in March of 2011 stemming from a grant through the Franklin/Fulton Developmental Disabilities program. Music Therapy was such a success that the Developmental Disabilities program has authorized monies for the program to continue. Brian Helman, who is working on his Masters in Music Therapy from Shenandoah University, facilitates the program on a weekly basis for 3 hours each week. Music from the 70’s, 80’s, Disco and client requests have individuals exercising, moving and grooving, singing and having fun to the beat of the music. Staff can be found joining in to wind down at the end of a busy work day. Beach balls, balloons, bubbles, rhythm sticks and a parachute are various means used to bring the music to life. During small group sessions chimes are sometimes played to the rhythm of the music. Approximately 20 individuals participate in the small groups Music Therapy program on a weekly basis. During facility wide Music Therapy as many as 50 or more individuals have chosen to participate. Donations to purchase supplies for the program may be made to: OSI Attn: Music Therapy
